Mental Health – Promoting Healthy Lifestyle
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “the condition of being fit and well” and “the absence of illness and infirmity”. A wide variety of definitions have also been used over the years. These include the definition from the WHO:” Healthy body, mind and spirit” and “the absence of suffering, disability or mortality”. According to another group of experts, the definition should be “the well-being of the individual with respect to health, the individual’s capacity to deal with the natural forces that control health and his environment (physical, emotional, social and cultural environment), the capacity to achieve and maintain health and a sense of satisfaction with life”. Still another group considers health as the ability to perform the basic requirements of life in its totality.
The ability to have good health is very important and everyone should have it. However, having good health does not always mean that you will remain that way. It is important to remember that we are always subject to natural aging and the effects it has on our body. Some of us are more prone to these effects than others and the effects may be negative especially if the effects start to show when we are at our prime. However, the sooner we start taking good care of ourselves the better and the easier it is to maintain good health status.
Having good health promotion is important. Many people spend their lives fighting with illnesses and negative health conditions. While some are fortunate and only suffer from minor health disorders, others are far more vulnerable to such ailments. Thankfully, there are many ways to promote good health and to fight off diseases that are all too common in today’s world. While many of these approaches involve personal resources, some are more effective than others.
One way that is often overlooked in efforts to promote positive health and to prevent the onset of mental illness is through the use of psychological counseling. The mental health care industry is huge and can be an extremely lucrative industry that allows for a higher profit margin as well as greater job security. This means that mental health professionals can command high salaries and that they can work from the comfort of their own offices or home. Counselors are able to teach patients how to change their thought patterns as well as how to deal with anxiety and depression that often accompany mental illness.
A second way that mental health professionals can promote good health and to ward off sickness is through the implementation of social determinants. Social determinants are used in all aspects of life and mental health can be no different. For example, studies have shown that social isolation makes an individual more susceptible to the onset of mental illness. It is likely that social isolation leads to individual developing unhealthy eating habits that are harmful to their health. However, when the person is able to have social contacts and develop healthy relationships, they become less likely to develop poor eating habits and are then less likely to develop mental illness.
Finally, there are public programs that are designed to promote a healthy lifestyle. Some of these public programs focus on encouraging healthy diet and exercise as well as promoting healthy behaviors such as tobacco and alcohol use. By working to promote a healthy lifestyle, people are more likely to maintain good health and to avoid the complications that can arise from not having good health. In addition, people are more likely to develop mental illnesses if they do not take care of themselves properly. Maintaining good health is something that everyone should strive for, and the sooner a person develops a healthy lifestyle, the better off they will be in the long run.
